When the child was a child
It walked with its arms swinging,
wanted the brook to be a river,
the river to be a torrent,
and this puddle to be the sea.
When the child was a child,
it didn’t know that it was a child,
everything was soulful,
and all souls were one.
When the child was a child,
it had no opinion about anything,
had no habits,
it often sat cross-legged,
took off running,
had a cowlick in its hair,
and made no faces when photographed.
When the child was a child,
It was the time for these questions:
Why am I me, and why not you?
Why am I here, and why not there?
When did time begin, and where does space end?
Is life under the sun not just a dream?
Is what I see and hear and smell
not just an illusion of a world before the world?
Given the facts of evil and people.
does evil really exist?
How can it be that I, who I am,
didn’t exist before I came to be,
and that, someday, I, who I am,
will no longer be who I am?
When the child was a child,
It choked on spinach, on peas, on rice pudding,
and on steamed cauliflower,
and eats all of those now, and not just because it has to.
When the child was a child,
it awoke once in a strange bed,
and now does so again and again.
Many people, then, seemed beautiful,
and now only a few do, by sheer luck.
It had visualized a clear image of Paradise,
and now can at most guess,
could not conceive of nothingness,
and shudders today at the thought.
When the child was a child,
It played with enthusiasm,
and, now, has just as much excitement as then,
but only when it concerns its work.
When the child was a child,
It was enough for it to eat an apple, … bread,
And so it is even now.
When the child was a child,
Berries filled its hand as only berries do,
and do even now,
Fresh walnuts made its tongue raw,
and do even now,
it had, on every mountaintop,
the longing for a higher mountain yet,
and in every city,
the longing for an even greater city,
and that is still so,
It reached for cherries in topmost branches of trees
with an elation it still has today,
has a shyness in front of strangers,
and has that even now.
It awaited the first snow,
And waits that way even now.
When the child was a child,
It threw a stick like a lance against a tree,
And it quivers there still today.

Άτιτλο
Δεν σταματάςνα αηδιάζεις.
Δεν σταματάς να απογοητεύεσαι.
Δεν σταματάς να μη σου αρέσει τίποτα.
Δεν σταματάς να βλέπεις την ασχήμια.
Δεν σταματάς να μπουχτίζεις.

Σταμάτα.
Κάποια πράγματα δεν σταματούν ποτέ να υπάρχουν.
Είναι έτσι.

Κι αυτό είναι κάτι.
Και υπάρχει πολλή αγάπη γύρω σου, πολλή.
Μη σταματάς να την βλέπεις.

Ένα μικρό λαθάκι.
O Βιολιστής του Μετρό.
Κάποιο κρύο πρωινό του Ιανουαρίου του 2009, ένας άντρας κάθησε σε ένα κεντρικό σταθμό του μετρό και ξεκίνησε να παίζει το βιολί του. Έπαιξε για περίπου 45 λεπτά. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτών των 45 λεπτών, δεδομένου ότι ήταν ώρα αιχμής, πέρασαν από μπροστά του αρκετές χιλιάδες άνθρωποι, οι περισσότεροι πηγαίνοντας στη δουλειά τους.
Τρία λεπτά μετά την έναρξη της μουσικής, ένας μεσήλικος κύριος παρατήρησε ότι υπήρχε ένας μουσικός που έπαιζε βιολί, τον κοίταξε για λίγα δευτερόλεπτα και συνέχισε το βιαστικό του βηματισμό. Ένα λεπτό αργότερα, ο βιολιστής εισέπραξε το πρώτο του δολάριο, από μια κυρία που το πέταξε στο καπέλο του καθώς περνούσε από μπροστά του χωρίς να σταματήσει καθόλου. Λίγο αργότερα, κάποιος ακούμπησε στον τοίχο και τον άκουσε για λίγο, αλλά μετά κοίταξε το ρολόι του και έφυγε βιαστικός. Πιο πολύ από όλους τους περαστικούς, ασχολήθηκε
μαζί του ένα τρίχρονο αγόρι που ήθελε να σταματήσει για να ακούσει, αλλά η μητέρα του τον τράβηξε για να συνεχίσουν τη διαδρομή τους. Το παιδί κοιτούσε συνεχώς προς τα πίσω καθώς απομακρυνόταν. Το ίδιο επαναλήφθηκε και με άλλα παιδιά και τους γονείς τους, οι οποίοι - χωρίς καμία εξαίρεση - τα τράβαγαν για να συνεχίσουν το δρόμο τους.
Στα 45 λεπτά μουσικής, συνολικά σταμάτησαν για να ακούσουν - έστω και για λίγο - μόνο 6 άνθρωποι. Περίπου 20 άνθρωποι έριξαν λεφτά στο καπέλο καθώς συνέχιζαν να περπατούν, χωρίς να ελαττώσουν την ταχύτητα του βηματισμού τους. Η συνολική είσπραξη ήταν 32 δολλάρια. Όταν η μουσική σταμάτησε και υπήρξε σιωπή, κανείς δεν το πρόσεξε. Κανείς δε χειροκρότησε, ούτε υπήρξε κανενός άλλου είδους αναγνώριση.
Αυτό που δεν ήξερε κανείς ήταν ότι ο συγκεκριμένος βιολιστής ήταν ο Joshua Bell, ένας από τους καλύτερους μουσικούς του κόσμου, και έπαιζε με ένα βιολί Stradivarius αξίας 3,5 εκατομμυρίων δολλαρίων, κατασκευασμένο από τον ίδιο τον Antonio Stradivari το 1713. Δύο ημέρες νωρίτερα, ο Joshua Bell έπαιξε σε ένα κατάμεστο θέατρο της Βοστώνης και η τιμή ενός κάτω-του-μετρίου εισιτηρίου ήταν 100 δολλάρια. Ο Bell αμοίβεται με περίπου 1000 δολλάρια το λεπτό!
Το συγκεκριμένο πείραμα, δηλαδή το να παίξει ο Joshua Bell στο σταθμό του μετρό incognito, οργανώθηκε από την εφημερίδα Washington Post, ως μέρος μιας κοινωνικής μελέτης περί του τι εκλαμβάνουμε ως σημαντικό, τι μας αρέσει, και σε τι δίνουμε προτεραιότητα. Η γενική περιγραφή του πειράματος ήταν: « Σε ένα συνηθισμένο περιβάλλον, σε μια ακατάλληλη ώρα, αντιλαμβανόμαστε το ωραίο; Σταματάμε για να το ευχαριστηθούμε; Αναγνωρίζουμε το ταλέντο σε ένα μη-αναμενόμενο περιβάλλον;»

Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
Ladies and gentlemen, of the class of '99.
Wear Sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.
The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.
I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth.
Oh, never mind.
You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded.
But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.
You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future.
Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind.
The kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts.
Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don't waste your time on jealousy.
Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind.
The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive.
Forget the insults.
If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters.
Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life.
The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives.
Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of calcium.
Be kind to your knees.
You'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't.
Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't.
Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary.
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either.
Your choices are half chance.
So are everybody else's.
Enjoy your body.
Use it every way you can.
Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it.
It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines.
They will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents.
You never know when they'll be gone for good.
Be nice to your siblings.
They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on.
Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.
Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths:
Prices will rise.
Politicians will philander.
You, too, will get old.
And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you.
Maybe you have a trust fund.
Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse.
But you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

Πολίτης σε παραλήρημα
Σήμερα τηλεφώνησα στο γιατρό μου και μου είπε να αυξήσω τη δόση των αντιψυχωσικών. Φυσικά δεν μου πρότεινε κάτι τέτοιο άνευ λόγου και αιτίας. Πήρε αυτή την απόφαση όταν του είπα τις σκέψεις μου για τη δολοφονική απόπειρα που έγινε χθες βράδυ εναντίον του αστυνομικού.
Του είπα ότι πιστεύω πως αυτό δεν έγινε ούτε από κάποια τρομοκρατική οργάνωση, ούτε από αντιεξουσιαστικά στοιχεία αλλά από το ίδιο το κράτος. Ναι, η αλήθεια είναι ότι η παράνοιά μου ξέφυγε πολύ αυτή τη φορά.
Φώναζα στο ακουστικό και του έλεγα "μα δεν καταλαβαίνετε κ.Ζεν μου τι κάνουν; Βάζουν κάποιους δικούς τους να πυροβολήσουν τον αστυνομικό (κι ας τον σκοτώσουν-χεστήκανε) προκειμένου να επανέλθει η κοινή γνώμη στα ίσα της. Για να μας κάνουν όλους να αγαπήσουμε ξανά το σύστημα, να αγαπήσουμε ξανά την αστυνομία, να μισήσουμε ξανά κάθε είδους ξύπνημα που τελικά μας ξεβολεύει από το αδιάκοπο χουζούρι μας!!!" Μου είπε να ηρεμήσω και απλά να πάρω για 20 μέρες διπλή δόση του φαρμάκου.
Το ίδιο μου είχε πει πριν από χρόνια όταν ουρλιάζοντας του έλεγα ότι τους δίδυμους πύργους τους είχε ρίξει ο ίδιος Μπους για να μισήσουμε όλοι τους τρομοκράτες (ποιους τρομοκράτες;;;) και να αγαπήσουμε τον Μεγάλο Αδελφό. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι πολύ με βοηθάει ο γιατρουλάκος μου. Είναι πάντα δίπλα μου για να με ηρεμεί από τις ψευδαισθήσεις και να με επεναφέρει στην πραγματικότητα. Κακό πράγμα η παράνοια...
